National Colligiate Hispanic Honor Society
Eastern Kentucky University Chapter
Our chapter of the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society was chartered in 1969. Its purpose is to honor those who attain excellence in the study of the Spanish language and the literature and culture of the Spanish-speaking peoples.
Sigma Delta Pi was established in 1919 at the University of California at Berkeley, and there are now over 430 chapters with 80,000 members.
To be elected to membership, a student must have the following qualifications:
- They must have completed at least three years, or the equivalent, of college Spanish, including at least three semesters of a third-year course in Hispanic Literature or civilization and culture. Those students enrolled in the second semester of third-year Spanish are eligiblefor membership if the instructor of the class will certify that their work is of "B" quality or better.
- Their grades in all Spanish courses must average 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
- They must rank in the upper 35% of their class (sophmore, junior, or senior).
- They must have comepleted at least three semesters or five quarters of the college courses.
- They must show interest in things Hispanic and be of good moral character.
Additionally, Sigma Delta Pi members are able to apply for a scholarship opportunity for summer study abroad in Spain and Spanish America. Please see Manuel Cortes for details.
