Major in Spanish and Spanish Teaching (B.A.)

B.A. in Spanish

Major Requirements: A student may major in Spanish by completing a minimum of thirty (30) semester hours in Spanish courses numbered 200 and above, 21 (twenty-one) of these must be at the 300 level or above. A grade of "C" or higher is required in each course for credit towards the major. Students are also required to pass a departmental proficiency exam which covers spoken and written language, culture, and literature. Strongly recommended: six hours in a second foreign language; three hours each in upper division English courses in grammar and literature; HIS 384.

General Education Requirements: Fifty-two (52) hours of the General Education Program.

University Requirement: ASO 100 (1 credit hour)

Free Electives: Forty-five (45) credit hours

Total Curriculum Requirements: 128 credit hours

B.A. in Spanish Teaching

Major Requirements: A Student may major in Spanish Teaching by completing a minimum of thirty (30) semester hours in Spanish courses numbered 200 and above; 21 (twenty-one) of these hours must be at the 300 level or above. The following courses are required: SPA 206 (waived in case of demonstrable oral proficiency); SPA 301 and 360; SPA 380 or 381; three hours from SPA 405, 406, or 407. A grade of "C" or higher is required in each course for credit towards the major. Students must attain a 2.75 GPA in their teaching major and must pass a departmental proficiency exam, which covers spoken and written language, cultures and literature, to be recommended for student teaching. In addition, students must take the standard program of 34 (thirty-four) hours of teacher education requirements. Strongly recommended: six hours in a second foreign language; three hours each in upper division English courses in grammar and literature; HIS 384.

Professional Educational Requirements: Thirty-four (34) credit hours in EDF 103, 203, 319, 413; SED 401; EME 442; ESE 490, 543; AND EMS 499.

General Education Requirements: Fifty-two (52) hours of the General Education Program.

University Requirement: ASO 100 (1 credit hour)

Free Electives: Eleven (11) credit hours

Minor in Spanish

A student may minor in Spanish by completing a minimum of twenty-one (21) hours in Spanish; 12 (twelve) of these hours must be at the 300 level or above. Strongly recommended: HIS 384. A grade of "C" or higher is required in each course for credit towards the minor.

Certificate of Culture and Conversation in Spanish

This short certificate is offered for students wishing to study the Spanish language and culture. The certificate allows students to provide documentation of their studies to potential employers and/or learning institutions.

Certificate in Spanish Course Guide (15 to 21 credit hours)
Prerequisites: SPA 101 and SPA 102 (or equivalent)
0-6 credit hrs
Requirements: SPA 201, SPA 202, and SPA 206

9 credit hrs

  Upper division SPA courses
6 credit hrs

A grade of "C" or higher is required in each course for credit towards the Certificate.
Four courses can be used for general education credit (Gen. Ed. 03, 04, 07, 08).

Advance Placement (AP) Credit

For a score of three (3) on the AP Spanish Language Exam, students will be awarded nine (9) hour credit for SPA 101, 102, and 201. For a score of four (4) or five (5), students also recieve an additional 3 hours credit for SPA 202.

For a score of three (3) or above on the Spanish Literature Exam, students will be awarded three (3) hours credit for SPA 310.

Retrocredit

Retrocredit recognizes successful previous study of a foregn language and encourages students to start their language study at Eastern at the highest level appropriate for them. Students beginning their study at the 102 level will receive retrocredit of three (3) extra hours for 101 if they make an "A" in 102. Students beginning their study at the 201 level will receive six (6) extra hours for 101 and 102 if they make an "A" or "B" in 201. Students beginning their study at the 202 level will recieve nine (9) extra hours for 101, 102, and 201 if they make an "A" or "B" in 202.

Where should I start my study of Spanish at Eastern?

Students with little or no knowledge of Spanish should enroll in SPA 101. Students who took no more than 2 years of high school Spanish, especially if taken during the freshman or sophomore years, may need to enroll in college at the 101 level.

Students who show an aptitude for languages as indicated by an English ACT score of 28, high school AP courses (with less than an AP test score of "3"), or 3 to 4 years of high school Spanish with grades of "A" or "B" may start with SPA 105 - Spanish Honors (3-6 credit hours). Spanish Honors starts at the beginning 101 level and continues through the 102 level at an accelerated pace. Students who make an "A" or "B" in 105 earn a total of six (6) hours credit.

Students who took 2 or 3 years of Spanish in high schools and made grades of "A" or "B" should be able to start at the 102 level in college. Students with enough high school language experience to start in 102 and make an "A" will receive an extra three (3) hours of credit for 101.

Students who took 4 years of high school Spanish and made grades of "A" or "B" should be able to start at the 201 or 202 level in college. Students entering at the 201 level receive six (6) extra credit hours for 101 and 102 if they make an "A" or "B" in 201. Students entering at the 202 level receive and extra nine (9) credit hours for 101,102, and 201 if they make an "A" or "B" in 202.

Students whose native or heritage language is Spanish should begin their study of Spanish at the 200 or 300 level. Consult with the department chair (Case Annex 368, 859-622-2996) for inquiries about individual cases.

Do you offer a Master's Degree in Spanish?
