Study Abroad OpportunitiesThe Department of Foreign Languages and Humanities supports and actively encourages its students to participate in travel-study progams in the various language areas. Principal among these is the Kentucky Institute for International Studies (KIIS), a consortium of Kentucky colleges and universities. KIIS provides travel and study opportunities in several foreign countries of Europe and the Americas, including Austria, Ecuador, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, and Spain. Additionally, there are a variety of more exotic locations such as Japan, Cameroon, China, and Turkey. Most of these programs take place during the summer months and consist of five or six weeks of study and travel in the destination country. However, more opportunities become available each year to spend a whole semester studying at a University in another country. In 2008, there are 24 different programs with over 114 courses offered in 30 different academic subjects. Students typically take courses in the language, literature, and culture of the country, and have ample opportunities for travel and tourism as well. The student may earn up to 6 hours of college credit, which is automatically transferred to EKU and applied toward an EKU degree. EKU foreign language faculty members participate as teachers in these programs. Costs vary from country to country, but most programs cost between $2,000 and $3,000 (excluding spending money).
